What began as a brief trip accompanying my husband on a professional engagement in Bucharest evolved into a profound journey of discovery and inspiration in the realm of jewellery design.
As a designer, I'm perpetually intrigued by how cultural nuances influence jewellery preferences. In Bucharest, I observed a captivating duality: some women adorned themselves with bold, statement pieces exuding confidence, while others favoured delicate, understated jewellery that whispered elegance. This contrast highlighted the diverse narratives jewellery can convey, shaped by personal and cultural identities.
A highlight of my visit was meeting Gabriela Secarea, the passionate founder of Galeriile Voicu. She introduced me to the ancient lost wax casting technique — a meticulous process where wax models are transformed into intricate metal pieces. Witnessing this age-old craft firsthand was both enlightening and inspiring, reaffirming the timeless connection between tradition and artistry in jewellery making.
I also explored Romanian Design Week, a vibrant showcase of the country's creative pulse. From architecture to product design, the event emphasized sustainability, innovation, and storytelling — values I hold close as a contemporary jewellery designer. It reminded me that the future of design lies not just in aesthetics, but in intention: in choosing ethical materials, honouring techniques, and creating pieces that speak to both heritage and modernity.
This unexpected journey through Bucharest's rich tapestry of design and craftsmanship has left an indelible mark on my creative outlook — and opened doors to new explorations in form, meaning, and material.
