How to Read a Diamond Certificate: And Why It Matters for Lab-Grown Diamonds - Adrisya

When a jeweller presents a certificate, it should answer one question with absolute clarity: what exactly are you buying?

For lab-grown diamond jewelry, certification is not a formality—it is proof that your stone is exactly what it claims to be, graded by an independent expert with no stake in the sale.

Here’s what matters—and what doesn’t.

Certifications You Can Trust for Lab-Grown Diamonds

For lab-grown diamonds, certification from globally recognised laboratories is essential.

International Gemological Institute (IGI) is the most widely used and respected certification body for lab-grown diamonds globally. An IGI certificate confirms your stone’s carat weight, cut, colour, clarity, and origin. At Adrisya, every lab-grown diamond above 0.30ct is IGI certified.

Solitaire Gemmological Laboratories (SGL) is also widely recognised across India and the Middle East, following rigorous grading standards. SGL certification is particularly relevant for buyers in the UAE and Gulf region.

Anything else—local lab certificates, in-house certifications, or institutions that cannot be independently verified—should be approached with caution. A certificate is only as trustworthy as the authority behind it.

What a Certificate Actually Tells You

A genuine IGI certificate will include:

  • Carat weight — the precise weight of the stone
  • Cut grade — how effectively the diamond reflects light (Excellent, Very Good, Good)
  • Colour grade — typically graded from D (colourless) to Z, or a fancy colour designation where applicable
  • Clarity grade — from FL (flawless) to I1, indicating the presence and visibility of inclusions
  • Shape and dimensions — the exact proportions of the stone
  • Origin — confirming the diamond is laboratory grown, not mined

Each IGI certificate carries a unique report number, which can be verified directly on their official website. For any significant purchase, this step is essential—and any reputable jeweller will encourage it.

What a Certificate Does Not Tell You

A certificate evaluates the diamond itself. It does not assess the setting, craftsmanship, or overall quality of the finished jewelry piece.

Two rings can carry identical certifications yet differ significantly in how they look and wear, depending on design precision and manufacturing quality.

Certification is essential—but it is only one part of the equation. The design, craftsmanship, and standards of the brand are equally important.

A Note on Hallmarking

In India, jewelry made with precious metals should carry a hallmark from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating metal purity—such as 925 for sterling silver, 750 for 18K gold, or 585 for 14K gold.

This is separate from diamond certification but equally important. Both should be verified when purchasing fine jewelry.
